Seven Gill Cow Sharks - Diving - South Africa - Sharktraveler
Set a few kilometres outside of Simonstown you can experience the thrill of scuba diving with this very unique species of Shark. Experience this prehistoric animal in its natural environment without a cage, and see why they are so popular. These animals are one of the oldest known species of shark and also a very deep water species, they can be found in all oceans but what happens here is very unique, this is the only known place in the world where anybody from a novice to an advanced diver can dive with them.
The Broadnose Seven Gill Cow shark (“wolves of the sea”) is a prehistoric apex predator. We have been fortunate enough to see them regularly enough at one location to be able to confidently guarantee an 85% chance of successfully seeing them. The Cow Shark is a social feeder and can be observed in large groups of up to 20 individuals. Females grow to an average of 3 metres while males are slightly smaller in size. Distinctive features include their seven gill slits and the absence of the front dorsal fin.
These sharks swim up and down a sandy strip at arms length of divers, it is only 12 metres deep and shark diving has never been this easy or this much fun. Set in a very nice kelp forest divers can go and enjoy the reef life, see 4 different species of Cat Shark, and on occasion also have a Spotted Gully Shark or two follow you around.
This dive is a must for both professional and amateur underwater photographers. These sharks can easily be identified by various bite marks, scratches and distinctive colouration.
Even though this dive is for qualified divers, we can give you an introductory scuba diving course or the full open water course so that you can dive with these animals.
