Whale Sharks Diving - South Africa, Mozambique - Sharktraveler
Brief description of your day:
- Briefing by the divemaster on your boat about the launching and safety procedures
- Watch a short DVD about the code of conduct when interacting with these huge and friendly giants
- Walk down to the beach and launch your boat
- The whale shark snorkelling trip whilst aimed predominantly at seeing and snorkelling with these curious creatures, also often encounters other sea life such as manta rays, dolphins and turtles.
- It is a 2 hour trip which heads around Tofinho point, which is the best area for spotting whale sharks when they rise to the surface to feed on the plankton coming off the point.
- You should bring sun-block, water and a hat along.
Your Experience:
Seeing the huge, friendly and curious whale sharks in their natural environment, they are very relaxed and inquisitive and will often approach snorkelers or boats. Their massive size is incredible when you consider that they are plankton feeders.
Your boat will launch directly from the beach outside the dive centre and you are free to have breakfast or a snack at our restaurant. There are hot showers and good coffee available on your return to shore.
You DO NOT need to be a qualified diver to snorkel with these magnificent giants of the sea as by far the best way to experience a whale shark is when it is relaxed and on the surface feeding.
Depart with:
One of our 8.3 metre semi-rigid superducks powered by twin Susuki 4 stroke motors and a spotter chair will be secured to the boat for an ocean safari trip, which vastly improves the chances of spotting these amazing creatures.
A maximum of 14 snorkellers for an experience not easily forgotten, to swim and experience these magical creatures will definitely be a highlight of your trip. There is a qualified divemaster and skipper on board as well as a spotter on board, and we have oxygen and a medical kit in the event of an emergency.
It is a 2 hour trip aimed predominantly at whale sharks, although our trips often encounter other marine animals such as various species of dolphins, manta rays and turtles. In the past we have even sometimes seen pilot whales and orcas from the boat. In the period from around mid-June through to the end of October every year it is also humpback whale season here in Tofo and they can be seen daily breaching and playing with their newborn calves. Unfortunately it is not possible to snorkel with them as their behaviour can be unpredictable as they are extremely protective of their calves.
You Need:
- Sun-block
- Water
- A Hat
- Don't forget to take sea-sick tablets before going out if you are prone to seasickness as it is a long trip and the swell can sometimes make you queasy.
